When my daughter turned 5 we let her choose where she wanted to go for her birthday dinner, thinking she would choose a typical kids place. We ended up going to Caesar's - she ordered the chateaubriand and shared with her sister and even had a go at the escargot (which was the only thing they didn't finish).
We have been exposing our kids to as many different kinds of restaurants as we can since they were born. But they know that their behaviour dictates where and when we go.
We also try to stick to 'off-peak' times when we take the kids. They eat at 5pm most days anyway so that is typically before the busy restaurant times.
