Basically you can't be hit once and need to rack up combos so you can't defeat the guys too quickly. Anything you can add-on to increase your focus lets you use finishing combos which are worth more.

about an hour into my second playthrough I realized, 'hey, I dont want to do this again right now' so went back and checked and only needed four challenge tokens. managed to get them quite quickly.
