The shooting I was talking about was actually in San Jose Del Cabo. I posted the article on the shooting below. They don't have it under control in Cabo by any means. In fact it's sky rocketing. 100 police officers in the area were fired in December for failing their evaluation and trust tests, which is shows you how bad it's gotten. There was 50 murders there in one month a couple of months ago (previous records was 7).

Perhaps the excessive amount of police just made me feel safer. I never felt unsafe. I guess the nature of the gunmen type violence is more random though. You feel safe until the unthinkable happens. Either way, I'd say that Mexico is generally much safer than most Caribbean countries.
