Thing is it's all relative.
In the offseason Mercer and a 1st would have been seen as an absolute coup even with 50% retained on Markstrom.
In the end it's all about balance.
I feel like in the end Mercer + 1st + Vanecek for Markstrom at $4.5M is very fair and still a win for the Flames. Would be the best return on a goalie since Schneider returned a top 10 pick for Vancouver.
