You're right, in a sense. But if you're asking why not just call it a $300k AHL salary and be done with it? Because if a player gets called up to the NHL for long enough, the "minimum guaranteed salary" provision may no longer apply.
Teams pay guys on blended contracts at a $200k rate per day in the AHL
unless they make enough additional money in the NHL to get to the $300k mark. The $200k is just a rate of pay, that's all. Guys on two-way $700k/$200k contracts earn at a $200k rate plus the $700k rate for days they spend in the NHL; if it were a simple $700k/$300k two-way deal, they'd be earning at a $300k rate plus the $700k rate for days they spend in the NHL.
