Blended contracts allow for a minimum total salary that's higher than the AHL salary a player would earn if he stays in the minors for a whole season. For instance, if a player has a minimum guaranteed salary of $300k on a $700k/$200k contract, and the player isn't on the NHL roster for enough days to bank a cumulative total salary of at least $300k, he gets paid out the difference at the end of the season.
I don't think Kirkland has done enough to earn a blended contract. They are also far more common in UFA signings than RFA ones. If Lomberg, Froese, Quine or Robinson return, I see them getting blended deals.
