Also think that Captain Marvel succeeding at the box office even though it had it's own Right-Wing attempt at highjacking the reviews of that film potentially helped them finalize the decision and decide to announce it now.

It would seem odd if that was the original plan, as it allowed Gunn to sign a contract with their rival. Great news to have Gunn back though, the more movies by him the better.
