I know its totally inconsistent but it doesn't bother me much with soccer jerseys, I would absolutely hate it on a Flames jersey. Again, its just whatever you become used to.
But the NHL know that the next generation will just get used to it, and anyone who is going to complain will just keep watching the sport anyways. This was always inevitable.

The most iconic rugby jersey in the world has advertising across it and that has not slowed the sale and IIRC this around 2010-2012.
I am sure this discussion was had regarding advertising on the rink boards.
