From the Avs perspective we needed a shake up. We under achieved bad last season so we instantly made significant changes to mix up the roster.
Bringing in one of the top young talents was a rare opportunity. We felt the Avs didn’t have a game changer who can take over a game on our roster. After multiple attempts to acquire Mackinnon from 3 GMs and unsuccessful we had to jump at the opportunity of Matthews.
The Avs have brought in Matthews, Bertuzzi, Demko and Backlund but are certainly not finished revamping this roster.
