That 1A/1B experience may be a good thing. He is able to use his knowledge and experience to support Rittich in becoming a 1A. I think where you have the present situation with two goalies with such a wide variation in age, experience and relative success, it is usually the more senior goalie that mentors the younger one, and helps him succeed for the good of the team.
I still think Smith has it in him to be a 1A, and as the year goes on,I think the best case would be for him and Rittich to share the starting position.
