You acquire a bad player then have to give up an asset not too long later to motivate a team to take him off your hands.
Over the long-term Regehr for Byron 1 for 1 would have been reasonable.

Acquiring Kotalik was bad.
But if you believe Feaster the trade was Byron for a 2nd. Regehr and Kotalik for Butler.
So one way to look at is 2 cap dumps for a bad player in Butler (who was then grossly misused).
A second for Byron is a good trade. Waiving him was dumb.
