If you're interested, Grant Morrison's book Supergods is a great chronicle of comic history. And The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay has a great setting at the outset of the birth of comic books and the legal and personal battles those people went through with censorship and accusations of homosexuality, etc.... Also it's a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize winning novel so there's that haha.
