I think that works to return results that contain the 3 letters plus some other letters, but not if you want just that 3-letter word with spaces on either side.

For example, in your link, there is a thread named Sayanara, Old Man Winter! It contains "say" followed by another letter. However, if you search for old*, that thread doesn't show up in the results, but threads containing words like "older", "oldest", Olds", etc. do show up.
