It's all about the $$$ and with the new format they get two Canada-US matchups per tournament, both which do big TV numbers in North America, and decent viewership for the semi-finals.
Not to mention it would be horribly from an "Equality" optics perspective for the IOC to try and do whatever they can to get the NHLer men back for the next olympics, while canning the women's tournament.

Plus canning it before the Beijing Olympics when China has been trying to make the investment, and before they hope to get them in Canada where it will be a big money maker, makes it a huge non-starter on both the $$$ aspect and the 'growth of the game' aspect.
