I don't think that is fair though, ESB was great on its own, Avengers 3 was great on its own. A movie can be great on its own and shouldn't have to lean on the others in the trilogy.

Lord of the Rings is another great example.

TLJ was not a great chapter in this particular Star Wars saga, but I was still able to enjoy the movie. I will admit though my interest has died down quite a bit in this trilogy. They were supposed to do a great job of bridging us from the old characters to the new ones, but they dropped the baton in the process and I really don't care that much about Rey, or Kylo, and especially not Finn and Rose.
