In actual fact, pressing ancient manuscript fragments between glass plates is a terrible idea. When the Six Day War started in 1967 archaeologists and scholars working on the Dead Sea Scrolls were forced to evacuate, and were unable to return for nearly two full years. When they eventually did, they discovered that numerous fragments had been crushed by the weight of the glass. In their absence the plates had been stacked atop one another, and this destroyed huge numbers of the artefacts.
