Yeah that first list is far from mainstream, but I'm not sure it's fair to say it was made just to be pretentious. This thread definitely doesn't tend to dip into much of the more extreme forms of metal from what I can tell, which narrows the field a tonne. Most of the bands he included are pretty big in the metal community.
Also, Neptunian Maximalism is insane and amazing, but really more abstract jazz.
I listen to just about everything that comes out, and I know and like a lot on that list. Overall I'm not crazy about most traditional, metalcore, doom, or black metal so my scope is quite different from this thread overall. My list definitely weighs heavily into more obscure death metal or grindcore personally, but I'm fully aware that most posters here wouldn't be into them.
Just to post some of my favourites in case anybody is interested:
Black Metal:
Cauldron Black Ram
Creature
Death Metal / Grindcore:
Cadaver
Earth Rot
Encenathrakh
Eternal Rot
Internal Rot
Kruelty
Necrot (in the linked list)
Primitive Man (in the linked list)
Temple of Void
Undeath
Wake (in the linked list, Calgarian band too!)
Heavy/Sludge Metal:
Demonic Death Judge
Ilsa
Probably the most accessible albums I'd put on my list:
Ęther Realm (poppy melodic death metal)
Igorrr (uh... everything in an insane industrial mix)
Haken (progressive metal with clean vocals)
Falconer (folk/power metal)
