His downfall is directly related to being a skating, long-pass rover whose skillset benefits from being on the right side playing in a stationary, short pass forward-oriented system where he plays the left side.
You wouldn't take Bobby Orr (who also favoured his off-side, BTW) and make him try and be Lidstrom. Different players have different skillsets and you have to utilize their skillsets, not force them away from them.
