I hope the Backlund situation is resolved and he is not lost for nothing. I promoted trading him in the summer when his value was extremely high. At that time I assumed Bennett and Jankowski would be able to fill the hole but I was wrong about Bennett who is better off as a winger.

I do see upside in Jankowski that makes me believe he will be a 2nd line C. Do the Flames want to pay Backlind to be a high end 2nd line C when he might be knocked down to third on the depth chart in 1-2 years?

If the Flames have any chance of winning the cup they need Backlund. If they lose him for nothing it will be poor asset management but they also can’t overpay him. The situation is getting tricky for Trelivng and for Backlund this is his best chance for a big payday.
