My experience, 4.5-5 star only and not the massive ones, it's totally worth the extra few bucks, higher end Riu's like the Riu Palace Riviera Maya are great but their not as kid friendly as claimed, a buddy of mine with an 8 and 11 year old raved about the Finest-Playa-Mujeres just north of Cancun.
