A crazy thing about these sportsbooks that are advertising: they are only legal in Ontario (and recently became so). So they are running national ads where the product is only technically legal in one province.
Like with other vices -- alcohol, drugs, cigarettes -- talk to your kids about the dangers of gambling and addiction. Talk to your friends if you suspect they may be developing a problem. That's one way to deal with the situation instead of depending on the government to act. Just like with alcohol, there are healthy ways to consume gambling as a form of entertainment.
Aside: I find the 50/50 tickets to be way more insidious. They promote extravagant jackpots which appeal to people's greed. They take a 50% (!) cut, and hide behind a curtain of 'charity', but who knows what 'charity' is actually benefitting the other way.
