He's trying to argue that Tkachuk may regress like Karlsson so giving him a big contract for a long term is foolish.
I don't disagree that the Knights were smart not to do a long term big contract after one terrific year. But he significantly overlooks the fact that Karlsson was not productive at all prior to his trade to the Knights (in contrast to Tkachuk, who's been consistently good and getting better).
So while yeah, you don't want to negotiate after a career year, it's a guessing game. I suspect Tkachuk doesn't have a whole lot more production in him - I think he's a PPG guy but not much more at the end of the day. But I also think he's a guy who will be pretty consistent over the years.
