Also, I don't think the comparison of the CSA to the Oilers is necessarily accurate. If the Canadian national team had Messi, and still missed the World Cup, it would be a fair comparison. To me, the better comparison of the CSA are the Flames during the 7 year drought in the late 90's / early 00's.

- They don't have the talent to get to the level they need to (World Cup / NHL playoffs)
- They don't have the budget other FA's have (remember trying to compete with the Rangers during this time)
- Outside of the diehards they get little support from the general populace
- They have a great young talent, but that's not enough (Davies / Iginla)
- They make some absolutely boneheaded decisions that do not help the cause (Zambrano / Herdman and Savard trade)
- Because it has been so long since they have had success, it just seems like they will never have it again
