I really really wished they would have explored that. I think they could have made Homelander somehow more despicable and clearly establish Giancarlo Esposito as a Lex Luthor type supervillain very quickly. All while doing it in a shocking yet somehow hilarious way.
Obviously I have no problem waiting to see how things play out, as this is a series that can divert expectations, but if this just becomes young hero kid only one able to defeat his villain dad (à la Star Wars and so much else) I think they really would have missed an opportunity.
Had he killed the kid, and it looking like him and his mom are trapped in some biodome type thing being carefully watched (she was trying to get out to talk to doctor not the other way around in my opinion, and they won't just have some random ultimate superhero kid walking around in public), then they could have had Giancarlo Esposito's character blackmail Homelander with the video of him killing a kid, his own kid no less. The only kryptonite we have of Homelander is his media portrayal as a superhero (and weird mommy issues). That would be the best way to establish Giancarlo Esposito's character as the ultimate thinking villain that I assume they are making him out to be.
But right now, it's hard for me to really be intimidated by him when Homelander could apparently kill him and all the executives of Vaught, make it look like a terrorist attack, save a bunch of other employees in the process, and come out smelling like roses.
Of course there's a question of why Giancarlo Esposito isn't afraid of Homelander and how he connects with a racist superhero in Stormfront.
