Senators won those playoff games in spite of Melnyk.
Ownership doesn't build a team, they just set the parameters through which the team is built. Over that stretch, the Senators have been a budget team and Flames have been at or near the salary cap. You could argue that the Sens would have had even more success had they been able to spend to the cap.
