Three years ago we sprayed the bottom branches of our tree with a bitterant that is supposed to deter cats from chewing things. Don't do this - didn't stop the cats one bit and every year since we end up with this gross stuff on our hands.
But yeah - don't use tinsel (deadly!) and don't put anything on the tree you really care about, even higher up. One of our cats liked tackling our tree in the midsection and brought the whole thing to the ground a couple of times.
