I do think he failed to develop, coaches should be observing exactly what you point out and making the player aware. And he had only the Gulutzan regime, that were crap coaches, eventually dead man walking and the team pretty much quit on.
The expression “Under pressure, you sink to the level of your preparedness” comes to mind.
You can say “nobody told you to turn the puck over” but that’s not coaching. That’s bitching.
Preparing a team so the players know what their options are before they get the puck is coaching.

I just won't go that far.
I think the team is playing a better system now, but the basics of puck protection and managing the puck wouldn't be lost on any NHL coaches, including last year's group.
