A few years ago, the wife and I flew to San Fran, rented a car and drove down the coast to LA and then up to Vegas. Flew home from there. It was a fantastic trip, but ended up costing a fortune. I believe we stayed in san fran for 3 nights, Monterey for 2, LA for 3, and Vegas for 3.
I was also just in San Fran for work for a few weeks. Love that city.
