I remember a story in the Calgary Herald a decade or so ago, about a guy out walking his dog in (I think) Nose Hill park, when he heard the whimpering of an injured dog somewhere out in the twilight. He followed the sound, but it kept moving further away. Suddenly it stopped, and he found himself well away from the trail, surrounded by a pack of coyotes encroaching on him.

He ended up having to draw his dog close to his side, and retraced his steps back to the trail with the coyotes always following him, staying only a handful of feet away. Eventually he made it back to a well lit area and the coyotes receded, and he booked it home with his dog.

So, based on this, I conclude that coyotes can be very, very creepy. But they're probably not dangerous per se (at least to grown dudes).
