I don’t see why the second security check was required because I had just gotten off a flight and only went through customs, but apparently that’s how they do things. It didn’t help that my backpack was held for “further inspection” in that security line due to an epi-pen.

Because you landed at the international terminal and your next flight was via the domestic, so you have to go through security again.
