They have a reasonable amount of cap room with 22 guys and if it comes to them really needing an extra guy for a while, they'll be able to bank some daily salary flexibility that way and they won't have to worry about long travel times for a call-up.
They can basically have their "23rd man" in town or close by while still getting game reps, which would be particularly important for a guy like Gawdin.
