I don't take this as they don't believe in Smith's ability at all. I just think they know if he goes down with a pull, or anything again that there's a real chance it could sink our chances at competing in or for the post season as demonstrated last spring. It's intelligent with the work done on the rest of the roster to seek some insurance in net.

That's not to write off Gillies or Rittich, just that they may not be ready for the responsibility of the starter position this season if something does occur. And with the buyout of Brouwer it's clear that management/ownership is banking on the work of this off-season to yield some immediate results.
