My older iPod (30GB) had the freezing problem, but I've had the 120GB Classic for a year or two and it never does that. It's obviously not as fast as a flash drive but it's not bad at all. The biggest "lag" is going to the main menu and getting album art in the background. Otherwise, switching tracks is smooth.
