I thought there was going to be a paywall too but I haven't spent a cent yet. You spend actual money on poke coins but you can get 50 poke coins a day free for being in a gym long enough. Also, walking a lot gets you a lot of rewards too so theres that. There have been some times where I was really low on pokeballs so I would spend a day or two just going to spin at gyms and stops and would only catch any pokemon I really wanted.

Edit: I think I was around level 14 or 15 when I kinda felt the same though. You can play this game and have fun without spending a dime .
