I think the seasons fit nicely into 3 clear tiers.

Season 1 was incredible and in the conversation for greatest television series season of all time.

Season 2 was average at best.

Season 3 was excellent but not to the level of Season 1.

Lots of great things about Season 3 including the performances of both Ali and Dorff. Carmen Ejogo is mesmerizing in every way. Lots of interesting themes that we didn't see in Season 1, but the case itself was far less intriguing to me when it all wrapped up. Additionally, Rust Cohle is about as fascinating a character as I can imagine for a detective. Season 1 has multiple episodes with 9.5+ ratings on IMDB.
