I would suggest watching the First Season if you can. I will spoil my thoughts on him if you do try to watch it.
Spoiler!
The lens are so completely different now. At the time Hatch was this great villain. Not because he went out of his way to piss off people like Russell did. Not because he was willing to lie about horrible things like Johnny Fairplay did. He was this villain because he wasn't there to 'survive'
he was there to win.
His most villainous act was forming a tight alliance that didn't betray each other. Honestly. Sure, he didn't have remorse, he was cutthroat, he was cocky, but before he came along there wasn't really this idea of alliances and strategy to the degree that Richard had. One contestant would even vote alphabetically, and that was 'acceptable.'
Hatch really turned Survivor into what it became, at the time it was really an unknown. This fun idea to send a bunch of different people from different walks of life into the outdoors with nothing but themselves to survive. Who should be voted off? The most annoying? The least physical? The least helpful around camp? But instead this alliance formed and decided who went home and there wasn't much anyone could (or at least did do) to stop it, and people hated him for it.
