I understand what you're saying. Sexual orientation shouldn't matter when it comes to politics. I myself would have voted Nenshi regardless of whether or not he is gay. But sadly, I don't have as much faith in a significant portion of the people who voted for him to think the same (especially some of the older, more conservative group). I think it would definitely have affected his numbers if he was openly gay.

But the bright side is, as the younger generation that has been brought up in a more tolerant time grows up, this should become less and less of a factor.
