According to the article, it sounds like the landowner came to some sort of agreement with the franchisee (although they won't walk away completely whole):

John Shim, whose parents put their life savings into purchasing the DQ franchise in 2013, said while this wasn’t the outcome they had hoped for, his parents are content with the agreement they reached with the landowner.

Shim said the entire ordeal has been emotionally draining for his parents and they haven’t yet decided what they’ll do next.

“Over the last three years they’ve been through so much,” said Shim. “I’ve told them, ‘Hey, we lost money but let’s not focus on that because at the end of the day, we still have people that care for us.’
