Because as a narcissist, money doesn't completely turn his crank anymore. He needs the cheer of the base to fill the black hole in his heart. He doesn't have the lasting power to be directly involved in politics and strategize, rally, talk to the electorate. He wants to get on his own soapbox on his own network and roll around in the adulation of the far right who worship him. Kinda like C3P0 and the Ewoks.
