Not being facetious at all, and I don't actually know if this is true or not, but I imagine that "last season" is a better indicator (predictor?) of next season than "two or three seasons ago" is. Granted, there are anomalies... injuries, coaching catastrophes, etc.
If I was a data scientist and felt so inclined, I would use that as a hypothesis and see if I could prove it wrong. Although, come to think of it, if I
was a data scientist, I would probably already know the outcome. (OK, now I'm being a little bit facetious.)
