Default Columbus Blue Jackets Meet Milestone

After today's game the Jackets have met an important milestone on the year. We have matched last years point total in only 41 games (54 Points). It took us longer than expected to do so after a mini-losing streak.

How did we get here? In the Fall of 2020 I took over a struggling Columbus franchise. There was very little in the way of prospect/pick capital in the organization and the main team was middling. There was also way too many Toronto Maple Leaf players.

In order to right the ship we had to burn it and and sink it first.

1) Traded everyone with any sort of value for picks and prospects. Trimming the roster down to the bare minimum.

2) Brought in mid 20 year old 3rd/4th liners and 2nd/3rd pair dmen that would serve as depth in the future.

3) Used our Cap space to sign vets to 1 year deals to trade for picks during the season. Eg. Doughty for a first.

4) Sold Cheese room to teams for draft picks and prospects. Basically leveraged the economy of the league to our advantage to turn around the roster quicker. This allowed us to make 7 selections in the first 60 picks of the 2021 Draft.

5) We bought cheap RFAs that other teams could not afford to sign (eg. Hronek for two thirds).

5) Bricked the entire 2021/22 season and let the prospects develop.

6) Sold picks at the 2022 Draft when they were overvalued. Flipped those pieces for value.

7) Last summer we started buying. Brought in Pastrnak, Landeskog, Palmieri, Kopitar, Gibson and Seth Jones. We bought from teams that needed the cap space. People made fun of the Seth Jones pickup, but if you looked carefully his rating made him a top 5 Dman in the sim.

8) supplemented the roster with Cheap vets in free agency.

9) Probably completely tanked the whole idea by adding Brian Dumoulin, Mark Stone and Joel Eriksson-EK to load up for a Cup run.

The lesson here is that you can make a quick turn around. It wont happen in one year. It was a fun challenge to try and dig this team out of the Graveyard of being completely overleveraged.

Hopefully this latest deal of Landeskog for Hall helps us get back into the Sim's good graces.
