I use Fongo, as I don't bother with a sim card. It's OK in a pinch, and probably fine for this usage, but I don't think it is good enough as a phone replacement. It is good for free calls, and I use Pinger for free texts. I like Pinger becuase it also has a web interface so I can text from my computer, since I rarely have my "phone" on me.
