If Nintendo had gone with CDs for N64, Final Fantasy VII probably released on Nintendo hardware instead of Sony, and the entire history of the last 20 years of gaming is dramatically different. Depends...imagine this if you will:
- Nintendo doesn't screw over Sony to go with Philips and make the CDi
- The original agreement gives up a fair amount of their control Nintendo has hoarded so far to Sony, and Sony essentially becomes the dominant player.
- After Sony makes a fortune on the Nintendo PlayStation (and probably destroying Sega in the process), Nintendo wants out and Sony decides to go it alone for the 64 bit generation, and we end up similar to today. There's no guarantee Nintendo likes the CD-ROM after the Nintendo PlayStation and tries to do the N64 as we know it.
- The main difference? Garbage games like Night Trap probably still comes out, but Sony publishes it instead of Sega, and Nintendo doesn't get much say in the matter. Sony developed that one themselves.
