They're very frequent up north and even on a weak night you can see them as long as you have clear skies.

Yellowknife or Whitehorse would be your friend's best bet. Yellowknife is more wide open so you have a clearer view of the skies. Whitehorse has mountains so you can get more interesting photos but they can block the view.

We went for 4 nights during the Easter long weekend last year. Saw them 3/4, the night we couldn't was because of cloud cover.
Most nights would be considered "weak" but still insane compared to what we normally see in Calgary and they got progressively stronger each night.
