They do get archived but they go to a subforum that isn't publicly accessible to prevent them being accessed due to the load they incur when accessed or searched (Google will index even old stuff and pulling huge threads up from the past can be heavy on the database).
Though I could maybe put them in an area that you have to be logged in to see them (so Google wouldn't be indexing them), but searching still might be a problem, but I'm not positive how big an impact it would be.
