On of my pet peeves about the game is when they make the shiny look almost the same as the original. The ones that look the best are completely different colour, not 1 or 2 shades off.

This goes all the way back to Gen 2 on the Gameboy Color.
In the early days, Gamefreak would simply switch the color palette of a Pokémon to a next suitable one in the game’s code, resulting in similar shiny variants for different Pokémon. So a lot of the early yellow pokemon in general have boring shinnies. Electabuzz, Abra and Weedles are like Pikachu. But Hypo, for some reason, isn't.
So several of the Gen 1 and 2 pokemon have boring shinnies.
Most pokemon Gen 3 and after have more noticeable differences.
