I went in 03, it was an amazing trip. but be prepared to spend a lot of money for the galapagos part of a south american trip. Back than I spent about $6000 for a five week trip and near 40% of the cost was 8 day in galapagos. That being said it is worth it.
I would say 8 day on a small yacht (16 person) is ideal. Best advice we had was go to the island in the morning before breakfast and you get the island to yourself before any other of the boats go to the island, and eat after and watch the hundred people in the small tourist areas.
