What is the rationale around the rule "No buyout is required for retired players UNLESS acquired via UFA BY THAT TEAM in the same season or preceding off-season.".

Just not sure what behaviour that is trying to curb. Especially since I feel like the real issue would actually be signing older guys that are close to retirement to long term contracts in the CPHL to win the bidding war with a 2-3 year contract, only to have them retire after 1 year.

Just my opinion but seems harsh to have to buyout a 34 year old who retired unexpectedly when he never played a game on his roster - since not like he really had any unfair advantage by signing that guy this offseason. If anything it just ate up cap space he could have used for other bids.
