Basically, if the sod dries within the first two weeks then you've failed as a lawn owner.
Don't fertilize until roots have formed or you risk burning your grass before it has a chance to take root. If you want you can thrown down some coated grass seed before you lay the sod as it will help keep the roots of the sod moist as they stretch down to the topsoil.
