They did make Snuffy 'real' though in the context of Sesame Street . The idea behind it was that having an imaginary creature that the grown-ups couldn't see or believe in would teach children not to tell their parents about things (sexual molestation etc.) for fear they wouldn't be believed.

I never made that connection until now, I don't think I even remember that Snuffy was never around when the adults showed up.
